“Made
In America,” the first single from Toby Keith’s “Clancy’s Tavern”
album, has a message – and one that is not lost on little ears. Keith
recently received a letter written by Mr. Green’s kindergarten class in
Michigan explaining that the 5- and 6-year-olds have been learning about
the importance of American-made products, and that they wanted to share
their findings with the patriotic singer. Green decided to teach the
youngsters just how beneficial buying local can be by getting them to
look around and see which homegrown products they currently own and use.
Green said the children “soon realized that most of their household
possessions were imports and they started checking labels at stores.”
The kids created a bulletin board and compiled a list of the American
companies “in hope that others would join the crusade.” Rather than send
their bulletin board to Diane Sawyer as planned, Mr. Green, his
assistant and his students sent it to Toby, who they felt would
“appreciate it more.”
